RWANDA: Birds & Primates
August 1 - 8, 2024
8 Days / 7 Nights
$5600
Single Supplement $540
Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and BIRDS!
Rwanda offers superb birding in a safe, clean and friendly country. Rwanda's main draw card for many would certainly be the iconic Mountain Gorillas as well as Chimpanzees, but it is arguably also the best destination for the Albertine Rift endemics other than the Congo, which is currently not a safe place to visit. At least 25 Rift endemics have been recorded in the Nyungwe Forest Reserve alone, more than any site in neighboring Uganda. Over 700 bird species have been recorded in this tiny country, which is about the size of the state of Massachusetts. Its small size makes travel within Rwanda effortless, and with most of the country lying above 5000 feet in elevation, temperatures are comfortable.
Our tour includes birding in three national parks -Akagera, Nyungwe, and Volcanoes National Park, all of which are among the seven recognized Important Birding Areas found in Rwanda. We’ve scheduled a full day to search for Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes NP, where the guides keep track of the simians and typically know where the nearest family is located. This knowledge is essential for increasing our odds of finding a family to observe and can also reduce the amount of walking we might have to do to encounter them.
